Three Rivers Tutoring Company started in 1999 when a family called to request that I tutor their son in math. I had taught this student the year before at Lake Oswego High School. They had somehow found my home phone number, figured I was tutoring, and called. I was not tutoring at the time, nor did the thought cross my mind. That family kick-started my business. Soon after, another family called. And another. And another. It was not long before I realized that I was providing a needed resource for the families of Lake Oswego and surrounding areas. Other than placing a shabby looking flyer in the math office at LOHS that first year, I never advertised my name or my company. The business continued to grow by word of mouth. Students talking to students, moms talking to moms, teaching colleagues suggesting my services to their students.
In 2002 I decided that I should name my company. I chose to name my company after the schools which I was serving the most in tutoring, the Three Rivers League schools. Although a large percent of my clients come from Lake Oswego school district, my company has also provided tutoring to families in the Beaverton, Portland, Vancouver, Riverdale, Tigard, Tualatin, West Linn, and Wilsonville school districts. Additionally, I have tutored students from a number of private high schools such as Jesuit, St. Mary's, Central Catholic, Westside Christian and Oregon Episcopal.
As my company was growing, my schedule quickly became saturated. It was becoming increasingly difficult to take any new clients. In 2002, I decided to expand my services by allowing others to tutor under the umbrella of my company's name. This not only allowed me to continue to accept math students, but to also venture into tutoring in other subject areas. Soon I had other tutors working with students in Spanish, Chemistry, Biology, Speech, and, of course, Math. This aspect of my business is continuing to grow to this day. I have an ever increasing amount of quality, professional tutors working for me to help meet the educational needs of the families that trust me and my company. I place a high value on providing the best tutors available. Not only do they need to be excellent teachers in their field, but they must also be people whom are sensitive and caring in knowing about individual student's needs.
In the summer of 2003, I decided to offer summer math preview classes. A local Lake Oswego church allowed me to use some classroom space, and I launched a humble summer program. The following year, I had a friend and colleague join me to offer some writing and reading classes at another local church. This summer, we plan to offer over a dozen different classes in math, writing, speech, programming, language, and social sciences. Because of this growth, I have expanded by leasing my own office and classroom space in Lake Oswego. During the summer, this space will be used to provide week long review, preview, and enrichment classes to the community. During the school year, the location will be used to schedule and hold individual appointments for the tutors that work with your students. This is an exciting opportunity to expand and continue to commit myself and my business to the local community.
